Chapter 22 Pretending To Be Decent
After Maggie and Nathael went upstairs, she intended to find a pair of men’s slippers. However, there were- none available. Joseph had been born into wealth, but since Maggie moved out of the Camerons, he had never been to her place. There was no particular reason for this, purely because her place was too small. In fact, her two–bedroom and one–living room apartment was probably not even as big as a bedroom in the Camerons‘ house. She didn’t know if Nathael would look down on it.
Subconsciously, Maggie turned her head to look at his expression. Nathael’s face remained calm, showing no sign of disdain. Instead, he said. “I’m fine barefoot.”
“I’m sorry, I forgot there are no men’s slippers. I’ll buy a pair tomorrow,” she apologized, putting her bag on the entrance cabinet and talking while changing her shoes.

“What would you like to eat?” Maggie asked gently. Then, she went to the kitchen and opened the refrigerator, not caring about Nathael behind her.
She had just bought groceries a few days ago. Although there weren’t many varieties, it was still quite abundant
However, when she looked at the full refrigerator, she couldn’t help but feel a bit dazed.
Upon reflection, she had been with Nathael for so many years, but she didn’t even know what he liked.
Lost in thought, she was brought back to reality by Nathael’s voice,

“Anything is fine.”
Maggie nodded. She checked the time and planned to make stir–fried vegetables, green bamboo shoots, braised ribs, and seafood curry. She quickly took out the ingredients after setting her goal.
After Nathael entered her house, he walked around the room. He was actually familiar with the layout and structure here because this was his house. However, this was her private territory, so he had never been allowed to enter.
The entire room was decorated in a retro American style with a high–quality dark tone. It was obviously carefully designed. Outside the large floor–to–ceiling windows, one could overlook a canal. The brilliant lights reflected on the river surface, and a cruise ship slowly passed by, occasionally making sounds..
Nathael stood by the window for a while. He knew he had lost control again.
From the joy of finding her handbag to inexplicably entering her territory.
He always seemed to lose control in front of her. His self–control, which he was proud of, was laughably insignificant.
Maggie was busy preparing the meal. It wasn’t until a while later that she realized Nathael had been quiet for a long time. She poured a glass of water and walked out of the kitchen, only to see his tall figure.
“I really like this river,” a clear voice sounded beside him, calm and quiet, different from her usual disdain

Nathael turned his head and saw the lights on the canal reflected in her eyes, more beautiful than the starry sky. Her pupils were bright and dazzling. Her cold and clean face was distant, but it was like the most bewitching poison, tempting him to sink.

“When I wanted to buy a house, I couldn’t afford it. The landlord was in a hurry to go abroad, and the rent was very low, so I moved in here first.” Maggie handed Nathael a glass of water and spoke gently.
In fact, she had made quite a bit of money over the years.
However, when she was young, she was inevitably reckless and proud. After she turned eighteen, she moved out of the Camerons and didn’t take a penny from them.
She worked part–time and studied afterwards. Apart from maintaining her own life, the money she earned was mostly used to repay the kindness of the Camerons.
How foolish she was.
“You’ll have it someday,” Nathael took the glass of water and spoke in a deep voice.
The warm water in the glass spread from his palm, as if it reached his chest, giving him an indescribable sense of comfort and warmth.
“Thank you for you kind words, Maggie said with a smile. She suddenly realized that whether in her past life or this one, she rarely had a good conversation with Nathael.
This feeling didn’t seem so bad.
She turned her head to look at Nathael. The man had already taken off his jacket, and his tie was loosely hanging around his neck. Compared to his usual inscrutable coldness, he seemed relaxed and charming, attractive and sexy.
“What’s on your mind?” Sensing her gaze, Nathael raised his eyebrows and asked in a deep voice.
She smiled and couldn’t help but say, “I suddenly thought of a phrase.”
“Hmm?”
“Pretending to be decent.”
Nathael was taken aback by her words..
Before he could say anything. Maggie stuck out her tongue, turned around, and ran into the kitchen.
She was just joking, but she had to admit that Nathael was so handsome that it was infuriating. No wonder she ended up blind in her previous life, probably as divine retribution for wasting such a good–looking
man!
Nathael withdrew his gaze, rolled up his shirt sleeves to reveal his muscular arms, and prepared to help in
the kitchen.
As he passed the living room, he saw a photo on the coffee table. He couldn’t help but stop.
In the photo, the boy and the girl looked slightly immature and innocent, both dressed in school

Nathael stood still, looking at the photo with a somber gaze.
The people in the photo were none other than Joseph, the boy, and Maggie, the girl.
He slowly clenched his hand hanging by his side. A beast named jealousy roared from the depths of his heart. He knew that no matter how hard he tried, he could not change the past. It was a past that he could not return to despite all his efforts and means.
During those youthful years, she probably didn’t even know who he was.
Nathael couldn’t help but pick up the photo. His gaze fell on Maggie and became lost.
The young girl possessed both stubbornness and intelligence, with her chestnut–colored long hair flowing softly and obediently. She tilted her head and smiled. Her eyes were pure and cold, with a touch of girlish shyness.
As for Joseph, standing next to her, Nathael simply ignored him.
At that moment, Maggie’s phone suddenly rang. She quickly washed her hands and glanced at the phone. Seeing that it was Joseph, she couldn’t help but roll her eyes, feeling utterly annoyed.
After decisively hanging up, she hesitated whether to block him directly.
However, she held back when she considered the upcoming plans of the Camerons, which would probably require Joseph to “influence” her.
After all, Joseph was not a patient person and couldn’t tolerate being ignored. It was best to just let him be.
Joseph stood downstairs and called Maggie four or five times in a row but received no response.
His expression grew increasingly unpleasant. Seeing the lights on in her house, he went straight upstairs to find her.
Just as the long–disturbed phone finally fell silent, Maggie breathed a sigh of relief. Then, the doorbell
rang.
Soon after, Joseph’s voice came from outside the door, “Maggie, open the door!”
“Maggie, I know you’re home! Open the door for me!”
“Maggie, open the door! Let’s talk it out. Don’t be angry!”
Maggie rushed out of the kitchen. When she looked up, she collided with Nathael’s dark eyes. He was standing by the coffee table, holding a photo of her and Joseph from high school. His eyes were dark and unreadable.
Maggie was at a loss for words.
She was in big trouble now!
